Post-Election Resilience

I doubt that anyone who regularly visits my Sundaymorningcafe.com website, my YouTube channel, or one of my retreat center links is showing up to catch my insightful, scintillating political point of view.  Rest assured, you will not be reading a political op. ed. today.

Having said that, as you take in this introduction to my video, you and I will be two days away from one of the most consequential elections in America’s history.  Without trying to sway your vote one way or another, I would like to make a humble observation.  At some point after Tuesday, November 3, 2020, there will be some proportion of my readers who will be happy with the outcomes of that election, and some who will be unsettled that their political outlook was not shared by a majority of the voting population in America, or at least, a majority of the Electoral College.

The “Braver Angels” initiative was formed by people in my profession (and beyond) in an effort to break down the silos that separate our culture into divisive tribes.  Braver Angels recently conducted a survey whose results indicated  that 70% of Americans deeply desire healing and unity for our divided nation.  With that in mind, I decided to replay a video I recorded in the balmy days of summer (okay, I also decided that a bike ride on one of Saint Louis’ last sixty-degree days would be a better choice for my mental health than constructing another Resilience video!  Rather resilient of me…don’t you think?…).  If you agree with the perspective encompassed in this video, please share it with as many people as you think would benefit from it!  And thank you to all of you who are following this initiative to enhance individual, marital, family, and societal resilience.  I am humbled by the depth and insight of so many of you who are part of this conversation!

Dr. Tom offers a reflection on weaving our culture back together.
